49TH WARD ALDERMAN ORR TO EXPLAIN HIS FAIR RENT ORDINANCE PROPOSAL TO ROGERS PARK TENANTS COMMITTEE MEETING
Chicago, IL — At the June 24 meeting of the Rogers Park Tenants Committee, 49th Ward Alderman David Orr will explain the measures called for in his proposed Fair Rent Ordinance legislation that will be introduced in the City Council prior to the meeting date. Alderman Orr will be the featured speaker at the meeting to be held at the United Church of Rogers Park, 1545 W. Morse Ave., Chicago, at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 24.
The second part of the meeting will be a Symposium discussion about the need for Rent Control and a Fair Rent Commission.
Symposium members will include Evanston Tenants Committee Chairman Michael Pensack and RPTC members Emma Johnson, Maurice Silver and Kevin Leahy.
The balance of the meeting will be devoted to updating members on recent RPTC activities including:
1. Organizing the tenants of a landlord who owns 15 Rogers Park apartment buildings that all have serious building code violations causing hardships for tenants.
2. Trying to aid senior citizen tenants in a 28 unit apartment building where rents were recently raised 80% (from $98.50 to $180) with only 19 days notice.
3. Support of a husband and wife facing retaliatory eviction for trying to organize tenants in their apartment building.
The meeting is open to the public. There is no admission charge.
